Dreams

He lies at my feet. Stretched out flat appreciating the comfort of the rug beneath him and the closeness of me. His breathing is regular and familiar and I can't help but look down and smile and I reach down to rub his ear. A dream begins.

I see Madison Square Garden - I see him gleaming up at me with his tail wagging and the judge points to us - Best in Show!

I see us waist high in cattails facing a large pond covered in lily pads - I reach down and hold a shaky hand over his broad muzzle and whisper his name and he takes off like a race horse - galloping to the edge of the water and sails through the air and makes the first of four difficult retrieves on his way to a field championship.

I see him eagerly sitting at the end of a ring awaiting my next command, he's jumping and weaving, and he's tracking in the field. I see his daughter romping through the house and I see her son winning like his grandfather and making me proud.

He is still but then the tail starts first - a twitch - a thump. His legs begin to move quickly and in no particular order and a quiet whimper begins a series of muffled barks. A dream begins.. He sees me smiling down at him and gently rubbing his ear.
