Punch's Big Adventure
Since it was so nice this morning, especially after we froze for most of April,
I decided it was a good time to take Punch for his first walk to the pond.
It's a half-mile from my house, down a dirt road. I took Beauie along as
well. He's the calmest of my dogs and the least likely to launch himself
helter-skelter into the pond. I figured Punch would take his cue from
Beau, and his introduction to water would go smoothly.
We strolled along the road, both dogs on leashes. Punch was happy to be
included and trotted right along. Everything Beauie did, Punch did.
They sniffed the same spots and even peed on the same trees LOL.
The pond is in the rear of a small, open field. Once we reached the field,
I let both dogs off lead. They happily explored the field together. As we
got to the end of the field, I turned to see a man and two black Labs enter the
field. As I was tying to decide if I should grab Punch and let Beauie deal
with the Labs, who were now running full speed toward us, I looked again.
It was my hubby and the two Labs were Scotty and Magee! Whew!
Beauie recognized them before I did and ran toward them. Punch was not so
sure and sat as close to me as he could, watching. Scotty raced over and
Punch realized who he was and met him head on. They raced and jumped and played.
Scotty and Magee didn't hesitate to plunge into the pond. Punch watched
for a split second and then followed. Uh-oh! He slipped under the
water for an instant and then bobbed back up. He tried to scramble out of
the pond but could only manage to get his front half out. I grabbed his collar
and helped him out, praising him for being such a good swimmer the whole time.
He shook himself off, kind of blinked at me, and ran off to catch up with the
big dogs like it was no big deal. Whew again!
Once we got all 4 dogs back to the house, I toweled them all off in the back
yard, and they spent the next couple of hours just lazing around in the
sunshine. Now they're all asleep, no doubt dreaming of their next
adventure.
